how to remove electrical connection on 1980 TA,301 engine
« on: February 01, 2024, 11:38:41 AM »
Hi All

Hope someone can help. I am taking my engine apart and came upon this electrical connection. I believe it is a temperature sensor.
How do I remove the connection at top.
I have attached a picture with an arrow showing the connection.

Thanks

I have not seen that before...it does not look like a coolant passage...perhaps a knock sensor.
Which would explain the shielded wire.

Is there another similar sensor on the drivers side head, with just a plain green wire?

It has to be just clipped on.

Is this a USA car, with electronic carb and a Computer Command Center (CCC) under the console?

Hi Wheelman, There is no similar sensor on the drivers side.
I did find this sketch and believe it is the detonation sensor.

I have attached a sketch that I found.

The car is a Canadian car. Non Turbo, electric choke only. I got it new with about 10 kilometers from Peter Burdens on the Danforth

Yep...definitely detonation sensor. It would pull timing back if detonation was detected. It may mess up your timing if that shielded cable is damaged. It should just pull off sideways.

My original 1981 turbo 4.9 was also Canadian and had one, including the ESC aka CCC.

When I put in the 400, I took all that out and just used a different module (4-pin) in the distributor and eventually replaced that with an MSD box. For mine, the temp sensor was on the drivers side head, but I moved it to the coolant crossover.

Sounds good...just don't lose those 2 little guide rings.
There are 2 different gasket kits from Felpro for the timing cover / water pump...one contains a few more items than the other.

Hi Wheelman

Cam and lifters cam in. installed them yesterday. Now will slowly clean and paint the intake manifold, timing chain cover and new water pump and valve covers. Slowly start to put the engine back.
wish me luck as I have never done this before. I have looked at a lot of you tube and forum chats.
Fingers crossed
Mike
