timing chain install for 301 Trans am, non turbo
« on: April 30, 2024, 03:03:14 PM »
Hi All

hope someone out there can advise me on this one.

I am almost ready to install my new timing chain set. just wondering do the dots on the crank and the cam both point to the 12 o'clock or does the cam point to 6 o'clock and the crank to 12 o'clock?

Thank you in advance

Mike

Did you figure this out yet?

IIRC.. either method works.

With both at 12 o'clock you are set up with #1 cylinder at TDC
At 6 and 12 o'clock you are set up with #6 cylinder at TDC.

Both are correct.

My method for finding TDC on #1 when working alone is quite simple.
1. remove all plugs  (easier to manually turn crank)
2. Roll up some paper towel ( like a 3" cigar) and place it loosely in the #1 spark plug hole.
3. rotate crank clockwise (looking at the car from the front perspective )
4. if you are situated just right , you will be able to see the paper towel. When on the #1 compression stroke , it will pop out.
5. Continue rotating crank until the "0" marks line up on the harmonic damper and timing tab.

Thank you for the quick response.

I have not had time yet to work on the car. I will let you know how it goes.

I know it is only a 301, but i am trying to keep it stock. I've been told it makes a great boat anchor, but for me it ran for 40 years so why not just keep it going.
